In January 2007, the House of Representatives passed the Clean Energy Act of 2007. This Act would rescind $14 billion in tax breaks voted for oil drillers in 2004 and 2005, and divert that money to alternative energy research. Members of the House who voted AGAINST the bill (i.e. for the tax breaks) had received an average of nearly 5 times more from the gas and oil industry throughout their political careers then did House members who voted FOR the bill (against the tax breaks).
